NRI Finally Returns Home After Long Legal Battle in Saudi Arabia August 19, 2019 13:23

A Non-Resident Indian hailing from Telangana who was accused of forging Iqama, a resident visa, returned home recently after battling for justice for three years in Saudi Arabia. The 68-year-old Gandam Narsaiah originally from Chandurti Mandal in Rajanna Sircilla district in Telangana state, was working as a mason in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. After working with a company for three years, he switched to a new firm. He was then issued updated Iqama with new employer name. As part of a routine drive, on one occasion Narsaiah was checked by a patrolling team in Riyadh and they discovered that the Iqama was forged. Following this, he was shifted to a jail in Dammam, 400 km away from Riyadh, since the alleged Iqama had been issued from Dammam. While in prison, as Narsaiah fell ill he was then bailed out by prominent social worker Nass Vokkam of Kerala three years ago. Since then, Narsaiah’s accommodation was looked after by Nass. With the assist of Nass, Narsaiah proved that he was a dupe who had received the Iqama from an Egyptian who had offered him the job. It took almost three years to turn out that Narsaiah was guiltless. The charge sheet was examined by various departments of the Saudi government who eventually permitted him to leave the Kingdom. Since Narsaiah could not afford the air tickets, Al Rabia Polyclinic, which is run by Kerala origins, offered him a ticket to coming back to his native. By Sowmya Sangam

Hold Your Nose! Half of Americans Don't Change Underwear Every Day: Survey August 19, 2019 11:52

The famous underwear maker Tommy John recently revealed disturbing statistics about Americans use of undergarment. The survey says that half of Americans don’t change their underwear every day. It found that 45 percent wore the same pair of underwear for two days or longer - with 13 percent saying they had worn the same pair for a week or more. "Conventional wisdom - and basic common sense - tells us that we should change our underwear every day, or at least wash them after every wear," Tommy John said on its website. "But how many people actually follow this golden rule? After surveying 1,000 Americans, we found that this basic standard of underwear hygiene is definitely not universal." According to the survey, men are the ones who refrain from changing their underwear every day. Men are 2.5 times as liable as women to wear their undergarment for a week or more - that's 20 percent of men versus 8 percent of women. (Image Source: XL102 - Radio.com) The survey by Tommy Johnson also found that 46 percent of surveyed owned the same pair of underwear one year - and that’s being faithful to underwear mean! ‘Women Should Be Extra Careful’   That being so, the company has urged to replace underwear often owing to "problematic microorganisms and fungal germs". "It's crucial to update your underwear wardrobe every six months to a year to ensure you're protected from harmful infections and health risks," Tommy John said. "Women should be especially careful, as they're more at risk than men to experience health issues due to unclean underwear." (Image Source: Flipboard)   Side Effects That Lingers If You Don’t Change Your Underwear Every Day:       1. Bad odor 2. Sweating down there 3. Building up stains 4. Increase in secretion 5. Economists Predict U.S. Recession in 2020 or 2021: Survey August 19, 2019 09:46

A day after President Donald Trump pushed back against talk of an imminent recession, a large number of economists expect a U.S. recession in the next two years but have pushed back the oncoming amid Federal Reserve actions, according to a survey released Monday. As a large amount of U.S. data reports, last week showed a mixed picture on the economy, Trump said: "I'm prepared for everything. I don't think we're having a recession. We're doing tremendously well. Our consumers are rich," Trump told reporters Sunday. "I gave a tremendous tax cut, and they're loaded up with the money. They're buying. I saw the Wal-Mart numbers, they were through the roof," he said. "And most economists actually say that we're not going to have a recession. But the rest of the world is not doing well like we're doing." His chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow also downplayed talk of a recession. "I sure don't see a recession," he told NBC's Meet the Press. "Consumers are working at higher wages. They are spending at a rapid pace. They're actually saving also while they're spending... So I think actually the second half, the economy's going to be very good in 2019," he said. (Image Source: Small Caps) The National Association for Business Economists (NABE) in its policy poll found that fewer experts now think the next recession will start this year. "Survey respondents indicate that the expansion will be extended by the shift in monetary policy," said NABE president Constance Hunter, who is chief economist at KPMG. Only two percent of the 226 respondents now see a recession this year, compared to 10 percent in February's survey, NABE said. However, "the panel is split regarding whether the downturn will hit in 2020 or 2021," Hunter said in a summary of the survey, which showed 38 percent expect a contraction of growth next year, while 34 percent don't see it until the following year. More economists shifted their recession prediction to 2021. The results show 46 percent expect at least one more rate cut this year from the Fed, while about a third see policy holding where it is now, with 2.25 percent as the top end of the policy range. Economists are skeptical about a resolution to Trump's trade wars, although 64 percent said a "superficial agreement is possible," NABE said. But that was before Trump announced another round of tariffs of 10 percent on the remaining $300 billion in goods not yet hit by the United States punitive duties. The new measures will take effect in two stages, on September 1 and December 15. As Trump continues his vocal campaign criticizing the Fed, the NABE survey found economists are concerned about the impact: 55 percent said his remarks do not influence Fed decisions but do "compromise the public's trust in the central bank." And over a quarter of respondents said the criticism will "cause the Fed to be more dovish than otherwise, thus threatening its independence." A majority of economy experts, when asked about fiscal policy, said Trump’s tax cuts "had an overall negative impact on housing activity over the past 18 months," due to changes in deductions allowed for mortgage interest. Watch: Journalist Jumps into Violent Protest to Save Indian Tricolor August 19, 2019 05:56

An Indian origin journalist is being acclaimed as a shining example of a patriotic after she valiantly saved Indian flag from getting ripped and battered. A video of Poonam Joshi that has gone viral shows her darting into the middle of violent protests outside the India High Commission in London last week to retain the Tricolour from a group of pro-Pakistan and pro-Khalistan activists who had ripped the flag into three pieces and was beating it with a shoe. Joshi grabbed the national flag from the protesters even as eggs, glass bottles and several objects were being hurled at her and other people of Indian origin who were celebrating Indian Independence Day. Read: ‘Modi: Make Tea Not War’: Protests Outside Indian Mission in UK British Pakistanis and pro-Khalistan Sikhs arrived in London in hordes to protest against the Indian government’s decision to revoke special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The protest, which initially begun unruffled in no time turned violent and riot police had to be called. (Image Source: Swarjya) London-based Joshi, reporting for ANI, recalled seeing a Sikh man rush from the side where the pro-Indian crowd was being kept behind barricades, holding the Tricolour. “We could see he was rushing to the Pakistani side, and they tried to grab him,” she said. “He quickly threw the folded flag at them. He then merged into the Pakistani side of the crowd, and the police did not allow the Indians on the other side to go after the guy. He was a very young Sikh man, wearing a white T-shirt with the words ‘Satnam Waheguru’ in between a picture of an AK-47.” Joshi next saw "a very large man coming to the front in a black hoodie and colored sunglasses, and he was holding our flag and he had a Sikh bangle on his left hand". She added: "He started unfolding the flag, and mocking and instigating and provoking the Indian side. I saw him tear the flag into two with his hands and then throw it on the ground, and then he started beating it with a shoe. Another guy, a bearded Pakistani, started crushing it under his shoes. He was mocking the Indians, saying ‘Look at what I am doing to your flag? Come and get it?’” (Image Source: BizAsia) Police officers shouted at Joshi not to cross the barricades. But she refused and darted towards where the Tricolour was being treated with disrespect. “My blood was boiling. It was just instinctive. I ran to grab the flag from him, and at this point, one part was in his hand and one part under the shoe of the Pakistani. I snatched it from under the shoe and his hand. A tiny part of the flag was left on the ground, which I retrieved later on,” she said. Open Letter to London Mayor (Image Source: Sputnik International) On Sunday, Joshi wrote an open letter to London mayor Sadiq Khan, which she also posted on Twitter. The letter says Khan let down the Indian community and that the “limited police resources” provided to handle the protest was shocking, more so because "the authorities had full knowledge of the scale of the protest”. Along with the letter, she posted three pictures of the men who she says “stole, mutilated and insulted” India’s national flag. “We demand the arrest and prosecution of these goons by the Met Police. These hooligans pose a huge threat not just to the Indian community but to anyone living in the UK and they are supported by MPs and councilors,” she wrote. Joshi said she was planning on filing a police complaint about the incident after consulting the high commission. “The reason I have put an open letter to Sadiq Khan is to demand answers of him,” she added. “Millions agree with my sentiments. The intention of these protesters is not to protest for peace in the Valley but to cause destruction.” A Met Police spokeswoman said: “We have no information about any flag incident. She needs to report to us, and not just put it on social media. We had an appropriate number of public order officers on the ground and an experienced command team monitoring events. This is the same as we have for all public order events.” By Sowmya Sangam

India’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Syed Akbaruddin's deed at a press conference after the United Nations Security Council meeting in New York is winning hearts of Indians.  As soon as he started interacting with media persons, Akbaruddin opted to answer the questions by three Pakistani journalists. When one of the journalists asked, “When will you begin a dialogue with Pakistan?” Akbaruddin left his podium and walked up to him and shook hands. "So, let me start by coming across to you and shaking hands. All three of you." #WATCH: Syed Akbaruddin, India’s Ambassador to UN says,"so, let me start by coming across to you and shaking hands. All three of you," to a Pakistani journalist when asked,"when will you begin a dialogue with Pakistan?" pic.twitter.com/0s06XAaasl — ANI (@ANI) August 16, 2019 In addition, while responding to one of the Pakistani journalists question that while he says that talks would take place between India and Pakistan, why has New Delhi closed all road that leads to dialogue, he said: “talks cannot happen while you increase terrorism. Stop terror and we will talk to you,” he said. ‘Entirely Internal Matter’                         (Image source from: Livemint)Asked about Pakistan saying that the issue has been internationalized, Akbaruddin said that in close consultations, anyone, especially parties to the dispute, can try and throw in anything for consideration of members of the security council."However, you have seen what is the outcome of that meeting. We are ready to address these issues in a manner that states who have normal approaches to international ties should address them. In our case, we are committed to Simla agreement. It is now for Pakistan to make that commitment to stop terror to start talks," he said."The recent decisions taken by the Government of India and our legislative bodies are intended to ensure that good governance is promoted, socio-economic development is enhanced for our people in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh," he said.Akbaruddin said the changes internal to India "have not made any difference to our external orientation" and New Delhi remains committed to ensure that the situation remains calm and peaceful. He said India was committed to all the agreements signed by it on the issue. He also took implied digs at Pakistan and accused it of encouraging cross-border terrorism."We note that there were some who tried to project an alarmist approach to the situation which was far from the ground realities. Of particular concern is that one state is using the terminology of jihad against and promoting violence in India including by their leaders," he said."Terrorism is being fueled, language and incendiary talk of jihad are being mentioned by people who should know better," he added.Akbaruddin said the violence was no solution to the problems. "We are committed to and consistent with previous positions that all issues between India and Pakistan as also between Indian and any other country will be resolved bilaterally, peacefully and in a manner which behaves normal inter-state relations between countries. We stand ready to continue our efforts towards a peaceful resolution of all issues in an atmosphere free of terror and violence," he said.‘Prevention Better Than Cure’                         (Image source from: Hindi News Khabar India TV)Answering a query about restrictions in Jammu and Kashmir, Akbaruddin said prevention is better than cure."The measures that we took were preventive in nature, they were designed to stop terrorist from bleeding our people," he said. Akbaruddin said there have been no fatalities in the past 10 days."That is because every effort was made to work and ensure that our people in Jammu and Kashmir are not adversely affected in terms of their lives. There are always difficulties (due to) restrictions. We acknowledge that. We are an open society but it is a balance of choice that the administrators on the ground should make and not journalists or diplomats. Please allow the space and time to address these issues. They have controlled the situation. You have seen there is not one fatality," he said."In similar situations in large parts of the world, including previously in Jammu and Kashmir, there have been large fatalities if such an issue arises. Give us some time. we are addressing it in a democratic manner. We are committed to addressing difficulties that our people in Jammu and Kashmir are facing," he said.Asked about human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir, he said no inter-governmental organization in the world has ever said anything about Indian democracy, India's commitments to human rights."We are the country who started issues of apartheid at the UN. India was the country which (worked for) changing the charter of human rights declaration. Our constitution is an open book and if there are any issues these will be addressed by our courts. We do not need international busybodies to try and tell us how to run our lives," he said.Akbaruddin said Jammu and Kashmir Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam had in the morning announced a whole set of measures that the government is undertaking to move towards normalcy."The Security Council at its closed consultations appreciated these efforts, acknowledged them. We are committed to gradually removing all restrictions. You are aware of the time table for that," he said."Our national position was and remains that matters related to Article 370 of the Indian Constitution are entirely an internal matter of India. It has no external ramifications," he said.‘Committed to Simla Agreement’                         (Image source from: Hindustan)Answering a query that Article 370 could be an internal matter of India and there were past UNSC resolutions, he said India and Pakistan had signed the Simla accord in 1972."We are committed to that and we hope Pakistan too will try to address these issues in the manner that they have signed on to in a legally binding agreement. We stand ready to address them in that context. We can go back in history but every new agreement overtakes the past. We are committed to that agreement and we hope Pakistan too is because if that is so, its actions do not seem to be working out in what is in that agreement," Akbaruddin said.Asked about Russia saying that it favors a bilateral tract between India and Pakistan on Kashmir and it was also the view of many countries at the UN, Akbaruddin said he will not take on the responsibility of speaking for the council."The council has spoken. All of you are aware of what outcomes are. Let me tell you India's commitment to addressing these issues on bilateral tract has very broad acceptance globally", he said.Who Is Syed Akbaruddin?                         (Image source from: Swarajya)Akbaruddin, a senior Indian diplomat, joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1985 and since then, he has represented India's interests in various capacities and promoted friendly ties across the globe. He was appointed as India's permanent representative to the UN in January 2016, before which he served as the coordinator of the India-Africa summit in 2015.He also served as the official spokesperson of Ministry of External Affairs January 2012 to April 2015.
