Mehul Choksi Surrenders His Indian Passport to Antigua Authorities January 21, 2019 13:37

Indian fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi, ahead of the extradition treaty hearing, surrendered his Indian citizenship and handed over his passport to Antigua authorities on Monday. According to reports, this measure is as seen as part of his plan of action to impede the hearing proceedings.India has sought Choksi’s extradition from the Caribbean nation of Antigua, where he is currently based. Earlier this year, after reports surfaced that Choksi may have taken refuge in Antigua, the Citizenship by Investment Unit (CIU) of Antigua & Barbuda confirmed that diamond trader was granted citizenship in November 2017.India has been making an effort to bring back Choksi from Antigua under the provision of a law of the island nation that provides for deportation of a fugitive to a designated Commonwealth country. Choksi faces various charges in India accompanying USD 2 billion Punjab National bank. The team in India led by a senior official on August 3, 2008, from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) handed over a request to Antigua for the extradition of Choksi who received citizenship of the island nation. "We have been told that they (Antiguan authorities) are examining the (extradition) request," MEA Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said, responding to a volley of questions on the issue during a media briefing. Following a complaint by the PNB that Indian diamond jewelry businessman Nirav Modi and Choksi allegedly cheated the nationalized bank to the tune of Rs 12,000 crore, both of them are being probed by the ED and other agencies after the bank fraud. The Chief Bureau of Investigation and the ED have registered two First Information Reports (FIRs) each to probe the case. Both Modi and Choksi left the country before criminal lawsuits were registered against them. The investigation is being carried out by Enforcement Directorate, a central probe agency under the union finance ministry if the allegedly defrauded bank funds were laundered and proceeds of crime were later on used by the accused to make over illegal possessions and black money.-Sowmya Sangam

Indian Community Changed India’s Perception Across the World: Swaraj January 21, 2019 10:06

External Affairs Minister of India Sushma Swaraj on Monday lauding the contribution of Indian community worldwide said the community dramatically changed India's perception across the world while ensuring that the country's global stature keeps on rising. She noted that while the Indian diaspora started migrating centuries ago, it is the migration of the educated, highly skilled and dynamic young Indians that has brought laurels to India."Today, many of the multi-national corporations are headed by young Indian origin CEOs. Whether it is Sundar Pichai of Google, Satya Nadella of Microsoft, Ajay Banga of Mastercard, or Geeta Gopinath of IMF - it is indisputable that Indians are leading the world today. Our diaspora has dramatically changed the world's perception of Indians, and of India as well," Swaraj said at the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. "Today, we have people of Indian origin, as heads of the state and heads of the government, and as heads of large multi-national corporations, raising India's global profile," she added.Talking about the steps taken by the government to address the grievances of the Indian community, Swaraj said that there is an 'Indian Community welfare fund' for carrying out welfare activities for distressed overseas Indians. The government has made online registration of foreign employers mandatory in 2015 to streamline overseas recruitment procedures and introduce safeguards into the migration cycle, Swaraj said."Grievances, complaints, and petitions of the Indian migrant workers are being addressed online through e-Migrate and MADAD. We are taking strict action against illegal and fraudulent recruitment agents, who are cheating Indian workers seeking overseas employment," she stressed.Swaraj underscored that the External Affairs Ministry has been actively using digital platforms and social media to actively enhance its outreach to the Indian diaspora."Today we are present on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, Google+, Soundcloud and Flick as well as Linkedln. We are disseminating real-time information about our bilateral and international relations and official engagements, and creating awareness and understanding about India's foreign policy issues through the use of social media. We are using various other tools like Podcasts and digital magazine to enhance our access to the diaspora youth," Swaraj elaborated. The External Affairs Minister further said that the government has also increased the scope for the NRIs and OCI (Overseas Citizens of India ) cardholders to conduct better research in Indian institutions and universities.Swaraj said that education sector in India has become very lucrative for the Indian community to pursue higher education, adding that the country is home to some of the best world-class university infrastructures and R&D (Research and Development) capacities such as IITs and IIMs."Along with high-quality education, we want India to be a hub for high-end Research and Development capacities. We have started various programs such as VAJRA, GIAN, and Mission Shodh Ganga to enable the overseas scientific community to conduct high-end research and development in India," Swaraj said. She noted that the government's aim is not to just export 'manpower' to the world, but to export 'skills'. She added that exporting 'skilled' manpower will not only garner a better image for India on the global space but will also lead to better salaries and better remittances, thus raising India's GDP further.Swaraj further said that in the last four-and-half years, the central government done away lots of rules and regulations and further opened up India's investment regime. "We consider you as members of our extended family and overseas Indians have been assigned a special place in the action agenda prepared for India's development till 2020 by NITI Aayog," she added.Naming the various developmental projects such as The Smart Cities Mission, Digital India, Skill India, Start-Up India, and the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Swaraj invited the Indian community to not only invest in these projects but also their ideas."We want you to partner with us to realize that dream. We invite you not only to share our vision of new India but also to help us shape her contours. We not only want your investment but also your ideas. We can gain from the skills and expertise of each other," the External Affairs Minister added.-Sowmya Sangam

Teasing Your Partner Playfully Can Be Good for Your Relationship January 21, 2019 09:50

Are you invariably in a mood to tease your better half? If yes, then there is good news for you.A new study suggests that couples who make fun of each other in a healthy way, are more probable to stay together. It further said that inside jokes are especially important since they affirm one’s relationship through laughter, according to a Daily Mail report. But then a couple who share mean-spirited jokes with unpleasant jibes are improbable to last, which indicates trouble in the relationship."Playfulness between romantic partners is a crucial component in bonding and establishing relational security," said Jeffrey Hall, Associate Professor from the University of Kansas in the U.S. "Particularly shared laughter is an important indicator of romantic attraction between potential mates," Hall added. The team examined more than 150,000 participants to find out how important humor is in a romantic relationship.According to results, published in the journal Personal Relationships, couples who create humor together - including inside jokes - are more likely to last. But, this does not mean that people who are humorous or can make a joke out of anything would be more fortunate in love. "If you share a sense of what's funny, it affirms you and affirms your relationship through laughter," Hall was quoted as saying by Daily Mail. However, Hall warned that couples should not go too far. Significantly, having an aggressive sense of humor is a bad sign for the relationship in general, but it is worse if this style of humor is used in the relationship, the study noted.-Sowmya Sangam

Indian Groups in UAE Miss Deadline for Proposals on New Immigration Bill January 21, 2019 06:39

Scores Indian expatriate groups in the United Arab Emirates have missed the finishing date to recommenced changes to New Delhi’s new draft immigration act that will replace the immigration act of 1983, according to media reports. The deadline to suggest changes is slated to end today.Earlier this week, the Indian government had invited public feedback for the draft immigration bill that makes mandatory for registration/intimation of Indian nationals moving for higher studies or for work. The bill was finalized in order to address problems of migrants and as well help regulate the movement of Indians overseas for education or work.AK Beeran Kutty, President of the Kerala Social Centre (KSC), told The Khaleej Times that he came to know about the draft bill just three days ago.“The (Indian) government should have circulated it through official channels and diplomatic missions. None of us even knew about the tweet put out by the Ministry of External Affairs seeking comments. I think we lost an opportunity to study the draft bill carefully and raise our concerns,” Kutty said.India Social and Cultural Centre (ISCC) President Ramesh Panicker echoed similar concerns, saying: “Not everybody is on Twitter. An important draft bill like this should have been made public through official channels. We got the circular from the embassy just two days ago. Though I have circulated it among our members, there wasn't enough time.“I hope the government will postpone the deadline and allot more time for the diaspora to give their feedback,” he told The Khaleej Times.Panicker added that he would raise the issue at the 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, which will begin in Varanasi on January 21.Bindu Suresh Chettur, a lawyer based in Dubai, said she hoped the government would extend the deadline. “It is an important bill that affects the diaspora and hence expat organizations should have the chance to get involved.”-Sowmya Sangam
